extrapolating turbulence measurements to the long term
During the Wind Europe Technology Workshop in Dublin 2024, Vortex has presented a methodology to calibrate turbulence in long-term, high-resolution synthetic time series, enhancing model accuracy with real-world measurements.
The calibration process merges actual data with models to create long-term turbulence series useful for event classification and extreme episode analysis. Despite the importance, turbulence calibration is uncommon in the wind industry due to the lack of long-term reference data. This study represents the first industry-scale attempt to overcome this challenge, emphasizing the need for high-quality, long-term data for effective calibration.
This calibration improves modeled wind speed and its standard deviation, addressing seasonal and directional biases, ensuring that the resulting turbulence accurately reflects natural patterns.
